Vespers at St. Peter’s church in Oare is rapidly approaching!
The service itself is at 6.30pm on 25th October at St. Peter’s Church, Oare, nr. Faversham.
If you are interested in singing as part of the choir on the evening we are holding three practices to make sure that we can give a good account of ourselves.
We may divide up the reading parts, the cantor’s duties and also try different ways of singing the psalms. Of course all this depends on how many singers we have and the balance of men and women and so on. The event and prior rehearsals are free. All music will be supplied and Helen will animate the rehearsals.
Rehearsals will be as follows:
Saturday 17th October: 10.00 - 11.30 St. Thomas’s Church, Burgate, Canterbury
Saturday 24th October: 14.00 - 15.30 Orange Street Music Club
Sunday 25th October: 17.00 - 18.00 Oare Church (We will need to get our seats organised, try the lighting and try out the acoustic and decide how to enter and leave and so on.)
We anticipate visiting ‘The Three Mariners’ at Oare for a social hour after the Vespers. We hope to organise some sandwiches/sausage rolls etc. Drinks to be bought yourself!

The flyer for our ‘Chant 101′ session has gone out confirming that once again our good friends at Orange Street Music are kindly allowing us to use their venue. If you are interested in coming please let us know at the usual email address.

Interested in Gregorian Chant?
Haven’t a clue about neumes, four lines, where ‘doh’ is?
This session is for you! We will look at the absolute basics
- What are those square notes?
- What key is it in?
- Basics of reading the music - in which order are the notes sung?
- Some common ‘shorthand’ used in printed copies
- Practice some simple melodies which we will use in the November workshop

Tim (our Chair) tells us that ‘101′ is how colleges in America denote a course that covers the absolute basics of a subject. A direct English translation would be ‘everything you ever wanted to know about chant but were afraid to ask’! A number of you have mentioned that you would welcome just such a session on Chant so we thought that it would be an excellent idea to organise one in time for our workshop in November.
This event will last for two hours on the morning of Saturday 18th October and will be led by Helen. The session will start at the very beginning and will answer questions such as ‘why are all the notes square?’, ‘how do I know which note to sing?’ and ‘What’s that squiggly thing?’ We will also practice some simple Gregorian ‘classics’ so that by the end of the two hours anyone attending will be able to confidently tackle psalms or a quick Salve Regina with ease.
Time and venue will be confirmed within the next few weeks.
